T – Day!

June 25, 2011

Trying to finish everything up.  More or less packed.  I’ll be picked up in 3 hours or so.

A shower, dress for the 1st day of the trip, try and chill out.  Excited.

Train is supposed to depart about 7 PM.

I don’t know if it will hold, but the weather has improved with glimpses of sun!

Waiting in the sun is better than waiting whilst it rains!  🙂

All aboard!

T-1 [& holding?]

June 24, 2011
If all goes well I head off on my adventure tomorrow evening.
Of course, there is a hitch in the plans.
The train & line I am to take on Sunday afternoon are the center of a crash in Nevada.  3 persons dead at last count.
The line appears to be a single line neighboring US-95.
As of now the Chicago Emeryville portion of the trip has not been cancelled.
Life is a beach and then you get sand in your shorts!  🙂

T-2

June 23, 2011

It is a gloomy, dank day.  I continued to do a little bit of packing.

I got word that Red Shift should arrive out west sometime tomorrow morning.  This will give the dealer plenty of time to tart her up for the road trip.  I expect to be reunited with her on Wednesday, 29 June.  I can’t wait.

T-3

June 22, 2011

I’m about half packed.  I’ve transferred needed date to my laptop for the trip.

Getting antsy as the day approaches.  I’ve never done a 3-day train trip.  The train trip west will be an adventure.  If I like it, I may well do it again.

Red Shift is most likely somewhere crossing the Great Plains about now.  Separation anxiety!  🙂

What a great answer!

One day I was speeding along at the typewriter, and my daughter — who was a child at the time — asked me, “Daddy, why are you writing so fast?” And I replied, “Because I want to see how the story turns out!” -Louis L’Amour, novelist (1908-1988)

Sob, sniffle.

June 16, 2011

On the 14th I sniffled & sobbed as Red Shift was driven to the truck to take it to CA.

I follow after it on the 25th via the train.  If all goes well, I’ll pick her up either late on the 28th or early on the 29th.

SNOW!

June 16, 2011

Two of the roads I wish to drive are still closed by snow.  The 3rd is probably closed as well.  Oh dear!

They should be open by a month from now.

“Reticence of Ravens”

June 7, 2011

When one reads a book by a relatively new writer, who is a newly acquired friend, there is a little bit of trepidation.  “Will I like the book?”  “If I don’t, can I continue to be friends?”

Well, I’m glad to say, this is not the case with “Reticence of Ravens” by M. M.  Gornell.  I had met Ms. Gornell on the Route 66 e-Group.  Her mystery novel had just been published & is set on Route 66 near Newberry Springs.  I thoroughly enjoyed the novel.  It is a page turner.

Having “met” Ms. Gornell online I was most happy to meet her in person at the International Route 66 Festival in Amarillo.  After a very enjoyable chat I purchased “Reticence of Ravens” to read on the flights home.  A very good move “Wombat!”

A secondary benefit may be to inspire a few more folk to drive the roads less travelled, especially Route 66 and New berry Springs.

The Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport.

June 5, 2011

The CPTA really has a bunch of incompetents employed in their accounting office.

I stayed at the hotel for Anime North.  The room was billed to Anime North as I was staff on the convention.

I was asked to provide a credit card against personal expenses.

The CPTA then placed a hold on my credit card account which totally screwed up things for a couple days until I was able to sort things out with my credit card company.

THERE WERE NO!!! PERSONAL EXPENSES!

I checked out on 29 May.  It is now 6 June.  The hold is STILL on my credit card account.

I wonder if the accounting can handle things without taking off their shoes.

I don’t recommend staying there to anyone.

If I work AN next year, I shan’t be providing a credit card to the hotel I’m booked into.

The Tasty Mongols’ Horde Meets!

June 4, 2011

Once more the stars align, and I’ll be out west on a road trip.  This calls for a gathering of The Tasty Mongols’ Horde Salon.  [Since attendees are writers, artists, & other interesting & varied folk, I feel “Salon” is appropriate.  :-)]

Saturday, 9 July in Sherman Oaks, CA.
