A snowy Thursday

December 28, 2012

On The 27th we actually got the snowstorm predicted, about 8″/20cm of snow.  As the temp was above freezing once the snow stopped, it was wet heavy, & great for heart attacks.  Thank you maintenance crew.

A good Wednesday

December 28, 2012

On Wednesday the 26th, pushing aside the fatigue from chemo, I managed to actually get a bunch done: get petrol, visit library, get air for my tires, pick up chemo schedule, pick up BaSO4 for CAT scan, shop at BJ’s, & get Depend at Wal-Mart.  It was either do it today or wait until Friday or Saturday due to the snowstorm on Thursday.  Then crashed out in my recliner with a book.

I for one, have never understood why men are so afraid of educated and intelligent women.  This seems to be over top in 3rd world countries.

A fine Tolkien Day!

December 15, 2012

Hullo Tolkien fans & Scholars and other fine folk,

The 13th was a busy day, a Tolkien Day.

Up at 0600 to get some coffee before chatting for an hour with a HS class on The Hobbit at 0725.  I had a good time & so, apparently, did the students.

I then tracked down the article on The Hobbit in the Albany Times Union, for which I had submitted questions,  http://blog.timesunion.com/localarts/the-times-union-hobbit-quiz/25724  .  I was pleased to see that I was the focal point of the article.  WOW!

After taking a nap Lin & I headed over to the cinema for The Hobbit.  We arrived at 1800 to meet up with folk arriving for the Line Party.  Yes, there were some there who had arrived before us.  Just after midnight on the 14th The Hobbit began.  Minor quibbles aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the film.  Unlike some, I don’t feel it got off to a slow start.  Moreover, most viewers know nothing of the back story.  Including this to give the Dwarves their motive for revenge and reclaiming their home works to  give the newcomer some idea of what is at stake.  I also felt having Bilbo begin to “grow” earlier than in the book was a smart move.  I did not compare it to the book, but how it scanned as a film.  It worked very well.  The major scenes were there.  I will see it again, tho maybe not in 3D.  🙂

The first 2 films of The Hobbit will be discussed at The 3rd Conference On Middle-earth, Part 2, either by panel or by presentation or by both.

Now is a grand time to join, if you haven’t done so already: http://www.3rdcome.org/registration.html

Skyfall!

December 9, 2012

Lin & I spent a delightful afternoon watching Skyfall!   I do love the James Bond films.   Lots of fun action, explosions, the usual.   We both recommend the film!

Hobbits!

December 3, 2012

Hullo,

A short update.

As some know, I was approached by the Arts & Entertainment Editor at the Albany Times Union [a Hearst Paper] to write up 20 questions on The Hobbit. Being a typical hobbit, I gave him 77 questions. 🙂

The editor seemed to be quite happy with the questions I turned in. While it was great fun to do, I will be getting a few dollars for the work. No complaint here. He plans to include a reference to the 3rd Conference On Middle-earth, Part 2 in the article. This is really neat as it is possible, being a Hearst Paper, the article and questions could go out to all or many of the Hearst papers.

I believe, the article will see light of day on Thursday, 13 December, the day before The Hobbit Premiers. Once I get definite information, I’ll pass it on.

I’ll also be posting the questions on the web site once the article is published. None are hard. Have some fun with them.

Have you joined 3rd COME, Part 2, yet? If not, why not? Now is the time to make yourself a present of a membership in the conference.

Cheers!
