May 30, 2012How to really insult someone!
May 29, 2012An insult, real or perceived, once resulted in a duel. To defend one’s honor meant to kill someone or to get killed. Thankfully, those times are behind us. Duels are now part of history, but bar-fights and other altercations show that we haven’t outgrown our revenge mentality.
Here’s another option. Imagine a world where a slight called for a verbal duel. The two parties get together and hurl the choicest adjectives at each other. Spectators cheer them on. And in the end the two shake hands and, having vented, go home.
Imagine that to prepare for this fight the parties involved don’t drive to a gun shop. Instead they head to the biggest, baddest dictionary they could lay their hands on and pick out words. The more obscure, the more colorful, the better. If your opponent can’t even understand the word you hurl at him what hope has he?
Consider this week’s words as ammunition — don’t let them fall into the hands of little children.

May 24, 2012My thoughts on the Boy & Girl Scouts
May 20, 2012Back a while I had read in TIME a multi-page advertisement/story on the Girl Scouts. Hmm, I thought, maybe the older scouts would be interested in my workshop on “How to Make College Work for You.”
I emailed the national headquarters, and they got back to me very quickly. They said I should get in touch with my local organization, and gave me contact info. I both emailed and called the local branch of the Girl Scouts. I mentioned I was a retired counselor and did a workshop on college that the girls might be interested in. The girls might have been interested, but neither they nor I will ever know. I never received a response.
Since I was writing the Girl Scouts, I figured, maybe the Boy Scouts would be interested. Wrong! Again, my phone call and email went unanswered.
I don’t mind being told that they weren’t interested in my workshop. I do mind being ignored. When an organization repeatedly asks for community involvement, then proceeds to completely ignore someone who wants to get involved, it does make one wonder why they bother to ask. To hell with both of them.

May 20, 2012Robert Wright Disposal Drivers need training!
May 17, 2012Yesterday, the 16th when I went out, I was nearly a traffic statistic. A truck belonging to Robert Wright Disposal turned onto Washington Avenue Ext. It put on its left turn indicator and proceeded to cut off a truck in the right lane. I then realized the RWD truck was continuing to edge over into the left hand lane. The only problem being that I was in that lane. I did edge over as I sped up, but had no real room as there was a curbed median strip.
When I stopped at the next light, the RWD truck came up to within about an inch of my bumper. I was thinking, hit me and I’ll own you and the company.
My friend Lin was also not a happy camper over this and wrote a terse letter to the company over the driving abilities of the company’s drivers. Of course, they did not respond.
