Good luck on your big Route 66 adventure. With so many people trying to squeeze the trip into two weeks, or less, it’s nice to know you have months to spend delving into all the Mother Road has to offer! It will be fun hearing your take on the people and places you meet as you slowly meander west!
I did Route 66 back in 1970 from Flagstaff to Chicago, and stayed at some really neat mom & pop motels and ate at quite a few little diners along the way. I took about three weeks to make the trip as I was in no hurry to get to Chicago, so stopped to see the many sights along the way. My 1963 Rambler Ambassador ran like a charm and got real good gas mileage driving about 50 MPH. I took quite a few pictures, but unfortunately they were lost in a fire. One thing I really liked was stopping in small towns to visit 2nd hand and antique stores.
Good luck on your adveture, and enjoy it. I wish I was going with you! Be sure and take lots of pictures of the motels, cafes, and other sights to share with us.
Have a great trip…shouldn’t be to far behind you, but your leaving about 2 weeks before me, so if you meander slowly, maybe I’ll see you along the way. Enjoy. I’m driving a Ford E150/Green. If you see one, check the back end and you’ll know if its me a) quebec plate should also assist 🙂
found this site whilst researching route 66- I hope I’ve come to the right place for an answer-
I’m driving from chicago to LA and desperately want to do route 66 right- but I have time constraints.
I hope this doesn’t offend anyone – but I guess I’m wondering how or which ways are a must see- and if there is a highway and route 66 combo I could do to see the best of the cool stuff and make up some time in other parts….
thanks in advance for your time

If you haven’t made it to Chicago yet, then drop http://www.windycityroadwarrior.com/ a line. Windy City Dave gices a great tour of the downtown area as it relates to Rt. 66.
If you join the egroup and ask, I’m sure you will get a year’s worth of places to stop and visit. 🙂 combined, I took well over 10 weeks to do my trip.
However, they will give you the start for your trip, no, ADVENTURE!

Wombats are easy to follow. We move slowly, but with purpose! 🙂
Once you get towards western OK, give a ring. Depending on where each of us may be staying, we can meet.
The trip has been good. I hope, yours is at least as much fun.
