Found on jan’s dresser

March 22, 2013

Found in the clutter on jan’s dresser. Given that the man bears a remarkable resemblance to jan, I’m guessing these are his parents.

UPDATE:
It’s been confirmed by Joan, one of jan’s cousins, that this is indeed jan’s parents.

The man never ceases to amaze me.

There’s a pile of books on a shelf in the library on how to get your real estate license. But I never knew he’d gotten one until I found this card. I have no clue when, or what he did when he had it.

Archeology at jan’s house

March 7, 2013

I’m doing inventory/archeology of jan’s stuff: what is this? what is its history? what are the stories around it?
UPDATE:
Consensus is that it’s the award jan got from an Italian convention in 1976 for his fanzine, Spang Blah. Comments on this can be found on jan’s Facebook page.

jan howard finder – RIP

February 27, 2013

Jan Howard Finder died at 12:54am on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, in Albany Medical Center Hospital CCU, from renal failure, liver failure, and basically all systems shutting down. Medically, we don’t know if it was the cancer finally going rogue, or the new drug jan was on when the old one stopped working, or a combination, or something else entirely.

I was with him when he died, and I had a friend with me. We probably had the hospital staff wondering about us, because we sat there and told stupid jan stories and laughed a lot.

jan will be cremated. And he wanted me to sit shiva for him, which I will. I’m planning on a memorial service in a couple of months, to allow as many people who can make it to do so. His ashes will be available for those who wish to scatter his ashes in those places he visited and among the friends he enjoyed.

Correction: I originally typed Tuesday, February 25, when Tuesday was the 26th. ~Lin

Shoot ’em up!

January 24, 2013

I agree, but the physical standards should be the same for men and women. Either women have to meet the higher standards or the standards are lowered to a reasonable [?] compromise.
