Subject: Chemo # 7 & 8 – Update!

The period between Chemo #6 on 17 January 2012 and Chemo #7 on 7 February was relatively quiet.  No real complaints.  Not that I wasn’t running up my co-payments.

I met with the oncologist on 2 February.  The good news is that my PSA continues to edge downward.

He has moved the chemo treatments to once every 4 weeks.

However, early in February my plumbing began to give me problems.  When I went in for the Zometa infusion on 21 February, my Red Blood Cell count was very low.  The next day I went for a 600 cc blood transfusion.

On 1 March I again met with the oncologist.  The blood test again showed a very low RBC count.  So for my birthday, the nurses did sing “Happy Birthday” to me and brought over a cake, back in for another 600 cc of blood.  I was able to enjoy the even with friends over dinner.  The filet was very good.

Amazingly, shortly thereafter my plumbing problems, temporarily, cleared up.  When I went in for Chemo #8 [only 292 to go!] on the 6th, the RBC count was high enough that another transfusion was not immediately required.  YEA!

I am still quite tired and run out of energy easily.  Fatigue is an off and on again companion.

While I still have some hair, it is mainly my eyebrows.  I’m still managing to hold the nausea at bay.  The meds and ginger seem to be working.

However, there is a new twist.  My toenails seem to be falling off.  Don’t worry, my toes are still firmly attached, I think.

My plumbing continues to give me some problems.  The severity of the problem varies from day to day.

My taste buds have not recovered.  Such is life at the lunch counter.

Now to the non-cancer news I mentioned last time.  The contract is signed.  I’ll be chairing The 3rd Conference On Middle-earth, Part 2, at the end of March in 2014.  The location, near Boston, is the same.  Please drop by our web site, www.3rdcome.org , for a look.  Join early and often for a full weekend of Tolkien related fun and education!
