Had a busy 2+ weeks involving SF & Tolkien. – First was LUNACON just north of NYC at the “Escher Hilton.” I had a very nice time. – Then after spending the day doing laundry I headed off to London and EASTERCON. I was getting back to my roots. My first regular SF con was the Bristol Eastercon in 1973. I’m a British SF fan with an extremely far west midlands accent. J I also enjoyed the luxury of flying Business Class across the Atlantic. So nice! The con was great, & I enjoyed the company of several friends for dinner, including one from Oz. – I then hosted a panel on “The Worlds of Tolkien” at my local library. Much fun. – I, of course, pushed both our local SF con – ALBACON 08 – & the projected “Reunion Tour of Middle-earth” in 2010 or ’11. I’m looking forward to it. – Now it would be really neat if I get the chance to work on The Hobbit. Now that would be an adventure! – Read The Hobbit on the flight. TLOTR will be for my next road trip in 3 weeks.

Your first con was back in 1973? That’s very impressive. And it sounds like you’ve had a full dance card of late. Love to have the chance to hang out at one of these functions, raise a glass or two with some of my writing colleagues, argue the merits of the latest Iain Banks offering, chat with readers, bibliophiles from all over the map (geographically and mentally).
I envy you your opportunities…

Cliff: — Nice to hear from you again. — Yes, I’m an Olde Pharte. I didn’t really get involved with SF fandom until the late 60’s with Tolkien. This was after grad school. Cons & travelling is why I retired.
— World Fantasy Con is in Calgary next October; http://www.worldfantasy2008.org/ . — Good luck with the film of your book. — Hmm, I’ve got this script about a Valkyrie who is truned loose after a 1000 years. She is not happy. However, love solves the problem. — Maybe the money from the film will allow you to get to a few cons. — Oh yes, Worldcon is in Montreal in 2009. — I plan to drive the ALCAN Highway in June of ‘09. Will I be passing anywhere nearby?

World Fantasy Con in Calgary? That’s only about 6 hours from here, barely a hop and a skip in terms of Canadian geography. I’ll check out the link you provided, see if any of my heroes will be there…

Have fun! WFC was here, well Saratoga Springs, last year. Our SF club ran it. — On my way to the ALCAN Highway I’ll be going over Edmonton via 16 and then 43 to Dawson Creek a Milepost Zero! A number of friends in Edmonton.
